THIRTY-SIX HONOURED AT MAIDEN TTU SPORTS AWARDS

Thirty-six sports personalities, sports clubs, managers and other sports stakeholders have been honored at the maiden Takoradi Technical University Annual Sports Awards. 

The event which attracted several distinguished personalities saw Raymond French, Ghana’s new sprint sensation, who is also a TTU student pursuing Bachelor of Technology in ICT, winning the coveted Sports Personality of the Year Award.

Key among personalities recognized on the night was the Chairman of TTU Governing Council, Dr. Samuel Amo Tobbin who was given a distinguished honour with a citation in recognition of his monumental contribution to sports development at the University.  

This was in respect of his leading role in the construction of a modern 1,500-seater-capacity Sports Complex for TTU that upon completion by December 2024 will have a football pitch, an 8-lane running track and three changing rooms equipped with lavatories.

The Vice Chancellor of TTU, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun speaking on the theme for the awards event; ‘Recognising Excellence in Sports at the Takoradi Technical University and beyond’, said the awards event which is the first of it kind in the life of the University forms part of TTU’s Strategic plan to create a sporty academic environment for total development of students.

“Takoradi Technical University has always been committed in creating an ambiance for growth in academics, sports and other extra-curricular activities. We recognise the need to help students realise their true potentials in every area of their interest. In line with our 2021-2025 Strategic Plan, Theme 3 (Social Development), objective 11 which enshrines that TTU support and reward staff and students with high excellence in sports and also institute an annual sports scholarship awards night, I am pleased that we are on the right path through the creation of this bi-annual sports awards.“, he said.

Rev. Prof. Eshun also mentioned that the TTU is on track to fulfill its mandate to develop the right sports infrastructure, and therefore used the occasion to commend personalities supporting such agenda. 

“It is a delight to make it known to you that as part of our 2021-2025 strategic plan page 70 which states our vision to construct a standard sports infrastructure through partnership, we are extremely grateful to the Chairman of Takoradi Technical University Council, Dr. Samuel Amo Tobin for his commitment to construct a modern 1,500 sitting capacity sports stadium for the University. The project is progressing steadily. Sports does not only make you fit and healthy but it makes one develop self-discipline, leadership and social skills etc. which are good qualities for our students as it also reflects in their academic performance.”, he emphasized. 

The Vice Chancellor while expressing his happiness for the event, also commended those who made it possible as well as the distinguished awardees for the night. 

“I am exceptionally excited about this annual sports awards…I feel honoured and pleased today as I stand here to acknowledge the successes of our gallant students who have made both Takoradi Technical University and their parents proud through their sporting feats. The latest was the heroic performance of our sports men and women in the Technical Universities games hosted by Tamale Technical University. Our noble University, TTU won 14 gold medals, 9 silver and 4 bronze medals to top the medal table of GHATUSA 2022 games. This award ceremony is aimed at recognising the immense contribution of our sports men and women and also inculcate competitive spirit among our students in achieving more for themselves and for this institution”, he noted. 

Distinguished personalities who graced the maiden TTU Annual Sports Awards included the MP for Effia Constituency and Minister for Public Enterprises,  Joseph Cudjoe, and the renowned Coach of Hassacas Ladies, Yusif Basigi.

Other Officials of TTU present were Pro Vice Chancellor of TTU, Prof. Victor Kweku Bondzie Micah, Professors Kofi Asante Kyei, Abigail Padi, Gladys Quartey, Owusu Ansah Ankrah, Dr. Kofi Kwarteng, Dr. Eric Bruce-Amartey Jnr, Dr. Francess Betty Fraikue, Mr. Mark Aremu, Mr. Kwarteng Amaniampong, Mr. Joseph Danso, and Mr. Joseph Mensah Oti-Asirifi, the Secretary of the Sports and Recreation Committee.
