The Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences (FOHAS) is one of the newly established faculties at Takoradi Technical University (TTU), inaugurated in 2024. FOHAS traces its origins to 1993 when it was initially established as Department of Science when the then Takoradi Polytechnic was upgraded by the Polytechnic Act 321 (PNDC Law 1993) to become part of the Ghana Tertiary Education System. Following the passage of the Technical Universities Act 2016 (Act 922) as amended by Technical Universities Act 1018 (Act 924) which converted Polytechnics into Technical Universities, the Department of Industrial and Health Sciences (DIHS) was birthed in 2020 under the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
From its inception, the department aimed to become a centre of excellence in providing science education, producing competent science and technology professionals. It also had a mission to conduct scientific research, disseminate findings through publications and conferences, and train middle- and higher-level professionals for the health and industrial sectors in Ghana. Since 2019, the Department has churned out several Science Laboratory Technology graduates recognised as well trained science laboratory professionals, technicians, and academicians, who are working in various public and private institutions, industries, and healthcare facilities across Ghana especially in the Western Region.
Over the years, the Department has provided several academic programmes, including:
Additionally, the department has supported teaching and research in science-related courses, such as Food Technology, Food Science, Sanitation and Safety, Nutrition, Environmental Impact Assessment, Ceramic Chemistry, and more. It also provided tuition in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at the non-tertiary level.
The establishment of FOHAS is driven by the need to address the evolving demands of the healthcare industry and to promote excellence in health sciences education, research, and practice globally. This initiative aligns with the University’s vision of becoming a world-class technical university recognised for excellence, innovation, and societal relevance. The Faculty will integrate existing and new programmes in medical laboratory science, physiotherapy, pharmaceutical science, medical imaging, science laboratory technology, and environmental and occupation health, fostering collaboration among departments, students, and key stakeholders at the national, regional and international level.
The governance structure of the faculty consists of a Dean, a Vice Dean, and Heads of Departments. The Deanery is supported by two administrative staff members: a Faculty Officer and a Senior Administrative Assistant. This governance structure of the faculty’s Deanery aligns with Takoradi Technical University’s strategic vision for 2020–2025. The management of the faculty includes:

FOHAS envisions becoming a leading institution in health education, research, and innovation within the region. To achieve this, the Faculty aspires to:
In addition to introducing Diploma of Technology, Higher National Diploma, Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Science, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master of Technology, Master of Science, Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, the Faculty will ensure that programmes meet global standards and align with emerging trends in health sciences. Programmes will be offered across existing departments and newly proposed ones, including:
The Faculty aims to establish a collaborative research environment to address pressing healthcare challenges, promote sustainable health practices, and contribute to policy development. By engaging with industry stakeholders, government agencies, and international partners, the Faculty seeks to create impactful research that benefits local and global communities.
Through partnerships with healthcare facilities, NGOs, and community organisations, the Faculty plans to enhance practical training for students while providing essential health services to underserved populations. Programmes in areas like occupational health, environmental health, and biomedical engineering will be developed with a community-centred approach.
The Faculty aims to establish a cutting-edge technology and innovation hub that will serve as a centre for training, research, and the development of health-related technologies. This initiative will focus on fostering skills in medical technology, telemedicine, and health informatics, preparing graduates for the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
By providing scholarships, grants, and opportunities for professional development, the Faculty aims to attract and retain highly qualified staff and exceptional students. Additionally, plans to develop state-of-the-art facilities, labs, and simulation centres will support practical, hands-on learning.
The Faculty seeks to pursue national and international accreditations for its programmes to enhance the quality of education and expand career opportunities for graduates. Through these efforts, the Faculty aims to establish itself as a recognised leader in health education within Ghana and beyond.
Generally, these aspirations will support the Faculty’s mission of delivering high-quality health education, fostering sustainable community health practices, and contributing to TTU’s overall strategic vision for 2020–2025 and beyond.
Everything that I learned at TTU really helped put me above the competition in the field of mechanical engineering.
