INTRODUCTION

The Department of Textile Design and Technology has been challenging, stimulating and developing great minds for more than a decade. Characterised by a tradition of innovation through rigorous research, the Department has broken new grounds, pushed forward the boundaries of knowledge and made a significant impact in textile design and production. The Department has a distinguished history of achievements and an ambitious agenda for the future.

MISSION AND VISION

To offer a platform for tertiary education in the area of textile design and production and to promote a hands-on approach for the development of creative and technical competence. The vision of the Department is to produce middle to high-level human resources to fit into the socio-economic sector of Ghana and to promote Ghana’s industrialisation agendum through research.

GOAL

It is the Department’s quest to promote a high sense of creativity in students through a variety of textile production activities in three main categories: Fabric Production (weaving, knitting etc.), Textile Finishing (Pre-treatment etc.) and Fabric Decoration (embroidery, printing and dyeing) by using appropriate tools, materials and methodologies. Again, the Department encourages the development and the use of local tools and materials to promote self-employment and small scale start-ups.

HND Commercial – Textiles

The Higher National Diploma in Commercial Art – Textiles is a three-year programme that has been designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes required in the industry. It also seeks to make them self-employable. Students are challenged to use their creative abilities, knowledge, skills and attitudes in areas such as: textiles design, weaving, embroidery making, dyeing, printing etc. The first year of the programme is for foundation studies where students study common courses. In the second and third years, students specialise. The programme requires a minimum of 96 credits together for graduation, hence the minimum requirements for full-time registration in each semester is 16 credits.

Bachelor of Technology in Industrial Art – Textiles

The Bachelor of Technology in Industrial Arts is a two-year top-up programme designed for graduates of the Higher National Diploma (HND) and holders of similar certificates and diplomas to attain theoretical and practical competencies that will equip them with the requisite skills to serve as: Textile Technologists, Weavers, Spinners, Dyers, Printers, Garment Manufacturers, Fashion Designers, Interior Decorators, Sales Representatives, Textile Designers, Private Business Executives, Quality Controllers, Managers and Mill Supervisors of Textile Production Units.

Master of Technology in Industrial Art – Textiles

The Master of Technology is a two-year programme. The programme is designed to offer opportunities for B-Tech/BA (Industrial Art) / BFA graduates to acquire more knowledge and develop further professional skills, competence and attitudes relevant to the textiles industry.

SHORT TO MEDIUM TERM PROJECTIONS

The Department will be comencing a four-year Bachelor of Technology in Product and Design Development very soon. The programme will provide students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge for broader thinking in art, design and appreciation of quality and aesthetics in industrial art productions.

The Department has highly committed and highly qualified teaching and support staff. They are endowed with a breadth of skills and competencies such as Computer Designing, Textile Design Research, Simulation and Prototyping, Machine Operations, Textile Production and Merchandising and Cultural Dimension of Designing and Application of Textiles
