TTU EMPOWERS ACADEMIC COUNSELLORS

The Takoradi Technical University Guidance and Counselling Section has organised a one-day training workshop for Academic Counsellors and Programme Coordinators to strengthen student support systems.

The workshop focused on building capacity in basic counselling skills, ethical practice, early identification of student concerns, and appropriate referral procedures.

The Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the occasion, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, described the programme as “timely and strategic.” He noted that Academic Counsellors and Programme Coordinators often serve as the first point of contact for students facing academic, social, and personal challenges.

Rev. Prof. Eshun stressed that providing students with the right support systems is essential to their success, adding that when students feel understood and guided, they are more likely to remain engaged and perform well academically, contributing to improved institutional performance.

The Head of the Guidance and Counselling Unit, Mr. Charles Andoh-Appiah, explained that the initiative was a strategic step towards enhancing academic and psychosocial support structures within the university. He said the training reinforced the role of Academic Counsellors as key figures operating at the intersection of academic guidance and student wellbeing.

In a presentation on Strengthening Academic Guidance and Student Support Systems, Mr. Andoh-Appiah emphasised that counsellors’ responsibilities extend beyond academic advising to supporting student transition, monitoring progress, and linking students to appropriate services.

He highlighted core competencies such as empathy, active listening, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity, as well as strict ethical practice, including confidentiality, professional boundaries, and timely referrals for specialised support.

There were other presentations by Rev. Frank Obeng and Lady Pastor Vivian Selase Opoku Nyanor on ethical counselling, empathy, and the importance of timely intervention in supporting students facing academic and personal challenges.
