A group of four retired electrical engineers from Los Angeles in the United States of America have donated over 100 engineering books to the Faculty of Engineering of Takoradi Technical University University. The books cover disciplines such as Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology among others.
The four benevolent retired engineers include Harmik Nersessian, Bhaskar Goswami, Quan Tran and Joe Forson, who is the only Ghanaian among the donors. Retired Engineer Joe Forson while handing over the books on behalf of the donors said they were motivated to donate the books knowing that it will not go waste but support the students in their studies.
“if there’s anybody to thank, it should be my Sister and Justice Otoo who encouraged me to bring the books to TTU. The whole purpose of my intention was to help the students. I didn’t want the books to get into somebody’s hand and use for some dubious things. So I spoke to my sister and she said Takoradi Polytechnic has been upgraded to a University and would need such books. She contacted Justice Otto and without these two, these books wouldn’t be on the shelves of Takoradi Technical University. I made a promise to contact some of my colleague retired engineers and so these are not just from me but some of them“, he said.
The Pro Vice Chancellor of TTU, Prof. Victor Kweku Bonzie Micah, who received the donated engineering books on behalf of TTU while appreciating the benevolence of the four retired Electrical Engineers, said the books would be useful for the many students who do not have access to e-books.
“On behalf of the Vice Chancellor and the University, I warmly receive these books and thank you so much for the gesture. I think the last collection of books we received from you have been of immense help to us. Getting books these days is quite expensive, so we do more investment in the E-Books area but a lot of students do not have access to the E-Books, so once they get physical books to refer to, it makes it a welcoming news to have more of such books.
For our STEM areas especially, the Engineering area, for our students and faculty to refer to them and help them do their teaching and do them right. We still ask for more if there is the opportunity. We are grateful for this gesture of getting us the opportunity to refer to relevant books that makes teaching and learning easier and relevant at this time and age as a University“, he noted.
The benevolent four retired engineers were led to donate the books to the University by Justice Otoo, a Lecturer at the Ceramics Department of TTU. Present to support the presentation of the all-important engineering books were the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. John Bentil and the Dean of Students, Dr. Bruce Amartey.
