PRIORITIZE YOUR BREAST HEALTH-VICE CHANCELLOR TO WOMEN

The Vice Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University (TTU), Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, speaking at an event to mark this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the University, has encouraged women to prioritize breast healthcare.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month event was organized by the TTU’s Centre for Gender and Advocacy, CEGENDA, in collaboration with the University hospital as well as the SRC Women’s Commission, where the Vice Chancellor highlighted the importance of regular breast examination.

“I want you to pay attention to your breast even more than you would on manicure or pedicure…Your health should come before anything else you cherish”, he advised.

He further encouraged men to support their partners in breast health, urging men to be vigilant for any unusual changes which can be vital in early detection.

“Men, don’t just play with your wives’ breasts-actively check for any abnormalities to help save her life,” he emphasized.

Professor Ann Doddor, Director for CEGENDA, while acknowledging the University hospital’s role in facilitating the awareness event, underscored the significance of early detection and routine checks in increasing survival rates.

“Early detection is crucial to improving survival rates, and regular checks are one of the most effective ways to catch the disease at its most treatable stages,” she noted.

TTU University Hospital Administrator, Dr. Eric Ahiable, stressed the importance of annual breast screenings.

A Nurse Manager, Lilian Araba Prah in a presentation on breast cancer, revealed that over 2.3 million cases were recorded globally in 2020, resulting in more than 600,000 deaths. She encouraged attendees to overcome any stigma surrounding breast examination and make it a regular part of their healthcare routine. She also demonstrated how to conduct a self-breast examination, empowering participants to take control of their health.

Following the educational segment, attendees were offered complimentary breast screenings, allowing individuals to check for any signs of breast cancer. The event reinforced the message that early detection through regular checkups can be a life-saving measure
