Takoradi Technical University, TTU, has climaxed its year-long 70th anniversary celebrations with a colourful grand durbar.
In his address, Vice Chancellor of TTU, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun reflected on the journey of the University over the past 70 years, which he said has shaped individuals and contributed to the developmental growth of the nation.
“Our theme for this celebration, ’70 Years of Societal Relevance: The Journey of Takoradi Technical University,’ aptly captures the essence of our existence. For seven decades, TTU has been a beacon of hope and progress, shaping lives and contributing immensely to national development. Through education, research, and innovation, this institution has consistently aligned itself with the needs of society, producing graduates equipped to meet the demands of industry and the ever-evolving global landscape,” he said.
Rev. Prof. Eshun, speaking about the University’s achievements, highlighted several infrastructure development projects, the introduction of new faculties, the expansion of the University hospital, emerging first in the National Schlumberger Petro Challenge, and placing third in the National Statistical Data Hackathon competition.
While expressing gratitude to the University staff and its stakeholders, especially alumni, the Vice Chancellor also encouraged the spirit of unity and values that will guide them in achieving the University’s mandate.
“We aim to position ourselves as a hub for innovation, attracting both local and international students while fostering a culture of excellence and inclusivity. This ambitious vision requires the collective efforts of us all, thus faculty, staff, students, and, most importantly, our alumni. Together, we can build a future that not only sustains our legacy but propels TTU to greater heights. Our alumni play a crucial role in this mission. Your experiences, expertise, and networks are invaluable in helping us achieve our goals. We call on you to actively engage with the University, contribute to its growth, and help shape its future. I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to all who have contributed to the success of this University over the 70 years. From our founding members to the current leadership, staff, and students, your unwavering dedication and support have been the bedrock of our progress,” he added.
Dean of Graduates School at the Akenten Appiah Menka University, Prof. Humphrey Danso, who was the keynote speaker congratulated TTU for its achievements, noting the significant impact of Takoradi Technical University in his life.
“The beginning of my academic journey started here, and this University has made me who I am today. I did my advanced studies in building and construction here. It was block laying and concreting at the time. I was here from 1996 to 1998, and during my time, all these beautiful structures were not here. This institution has not only provided us with skills but also shaped our character. There has been a great and massive change in this university. The board, the management, the VC, and your team, we appreciate what you have done for this university,” he noted.
He called on individuals to be agents of transformation while embracing new opportunities.
“Whether it is in our professional careers, our communities, or our personal lives, let us strive to be agents of change, inspire others, and make a difference. Let us express our gratitude for the opportunities we have been given. Let us carry forward the spirit of TTU with pride and honour, and let us look to the future with hope, knowing that we are equipped to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead,” he said.
Prof. Humphrey also urged faculty members to contribute their quota to the development of the University by publishing and teaching with diligence, while also calling on alumni to support the University.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Ing. Dr. Robert Adjaye, also a Council Member stated that the council, over the past 70 years, has regulated the affairs of the University to meet academic and industry standards, contributing to national development.
“The strategic direction of Takoradi Technical University has always been centred on excellence, innovation, and societal relevance. The Council’s role in steering this vision ensures that our programmes, faculty, and infrastructure are in line with the needs of industry and society. Over the past 70 years, we have consistently adapted to the changing landscape of education and the workforce, ensuring that our graduates are equipped with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national and global development,” he stated.
Recognizing the significant role of the Council, he reaffirmed the council’s commitment to ensuring academic growth and fostering a progressive University community.
Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, also speaking at the Grand Durbar, commended TTU for 70 years of impact but called for the prioritization of technical education, as it is the bedrock of every developed nation.
The GNPC Foundation’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Dominic Eduah who is an alumnus of TTU also encouraged other alumni to mentor the younger generation of students and build strong connections with them.
Sparks Construction firm donated GH¢100,000 to support the 70th Anniversary celebration. In addition, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Effia Constituency, Lawyer Yaw Boamah, donated an amount of GH¢20,000 to support the anniversary celebrations, while the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Abdul Majeed, also donated GH¢10,000, among several donations.
The main TTU 70 Anniversary Committee led by its Chairman, Prof. Victor Kweku Bondzie Micah was introduced for commendation for the year-long planning and execution of a successful celebration.
