TTU’S WINE LAUNCHES SHECODES CLUB CHAPTER

Women In Engineering, WINE, of Takoradi Technical University, TTU, in collaboration with Rail KNUST, has officially launched the SheCodes Club TTU Chapter. This initiative is sponsored by Artificial Intelligence for Development, AI4D, the International Development Research Centre, IDRC, Canada, and the UK Government in partnership with University of Cape Verde.

The SheCodes initiative is designed to empower women in the engineering and technology sectors by equipping them with the skills to code and address developmental challenges. Although the programme primarily focuses on women, it is open to male participants as well.

The objective of SheCodes is to inspire and mentor women to enter the engineering space and to equip them with the technological expertise needed to excel academically and professionally.

Speaking at the event, the Pro Vice Chancellor of TTU, Prof. Victor Kweku Bondzie Micah, while expressing his excitement about the efforts of the young women dedicated to breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes in a traditionally male-dominated field, highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment:

“Women have always been at the forefront of discovery and innovation. As we embark on this journey, let us remember that diversity fuels innovation. When we empower women, we unlock new perspectives, fresh ideas, and ground-breaking solutions to the challenges of our time. Together, we can build a future where talent, not gender, determines opportunity. By continuing to empower our girls, breaking barriers, challenging biases, and fostering mentorship and collaboration, we are paving the way for future generations of women to excel in STEM,” he said.

Prof. Micah also urged all students involved to seize the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow.

“Let this be a space where ideas are nurtured, challenges are overcome, and dreams are realized. Together, we can create a future where women in STEM-related fields are not the exception but the norm,” he added.

Ing. Dr. Mrs. Eunice Akyer-eko Adjei, Team Lead for Women in Technology and AI in Education of KNUST, also provided words of motivation for the students eager to join the club.

“SheCodes is about empowering women. Our focus is on equity and removing biases against women in the technological space. Do your best to engage in this empowerment and equip yourself with the skills that will enhance your job prospects and allow you to impact society,” she encouraged.

The launch will follow with representatives from Rail to conduct practical training over 16 weeks, beginning on February 8th where members must attend at least 14 out of the 16 weeks to qualify for a certificate.

Members will face a challenge in areas such as health, education, energy, agriculture, and STEM where they will be tasked with using the skills they have learned to solve problem.

The goal is for these solutions to progress from research to development and, ultimately, to a start-up phase. This approach aims to empower participants with the entrepreneurial skills needed for future success.

The leadership team was selected to help mentor the club which includes: Ing. Dr. Mrs. Esther Kyere Andoh-Acquah, Ing. Mrs. Doreen Amoah, Ing. Mrs. Hawa Asampong, Mr. Kingsley Nunoo, Mr. Musah Ali Abraham, and Miss Annie Andoh.

Everything that I learned at TTU really helped put me above the competition in the field of mechanical engineering.
