The Pro Vice Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Prof Ellis Owusu-Dabo, has reminded higher educational institutions of its mandate to positively impact society through research. Professor Owusu-Dabo who was speaking at the induction ceremony of 65 newly appointed Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments of Takoradi Technical University said it is only through research that higher educational institutions can leave legacies of impact in society.

“We seem to lack the understanding of our primary role as university lecturers which is to research and out of research teach. The way to exert our presence and relevance on the global space is to research despite the funding challenges. There is however available grants for research but that start with developing new research idea…If you’re able to get yourself out there in the literature field in a small way, with time they will chase you with funding but that starts with a brilliant and well packaged idea.. The technical report is fine as a researcher but if you want to enhance your visibility, then you have to look at peer review publications”, he said.

Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo who is also a renowned Ghanaian epidemiologist with over 250 publications to his credit, while alluding to the usual challenge of funding for research said there are numerous grants available for research.

“You can’t excel at research by relying on just the Book and Research allowance…idea is paramount to getting a grant and there is no stupid idea but let’s improve on our packaging…To develop a research idea that would get you that grant, you need curiosity, critical thinking and courage to carry through your idea”, he added.

The KNUST Pro Vice Chancellor further said that if the Ghanaian economy is to be transformed, higher educational institutions have to move away from theoretical to entrepreneurship where Technical Universities like Takoradi Technical University would be crucial.

He therefore asked the TTU registry to setup the office of Fund and Research to facilitate letters of research support.

The Registrar of TTU, Dr. Moses Maclean Abnory also speaking before the HODs took their oath of secrecy and swearing-in asked them to utilize documents presented to them in both soft and hard copies to guide their mandate.

“Let’s ensure we make references from the documents presented to you to guide your term of office so we can remove all discretions from our processes.”
