TTU SET TO WIN “THE GAS CHALLENGE” TO CONCRETIZE ITS PETROLEUM TRAINING HUB STATUS

Takoradi Technical University, TTU, is bent on winning this year’s Gas Challenge competition to give meaning to its rightful place as the hub for oil and gas education. Justice John Owusu, a Lecturer and the Lead Coach of the three-member TTU contingent at the 2021 Gas Challenge said this when highlighting their preparations.

The Gas Challenge is an inter-tertiary education quiz competition initiative by the Ghana National Gas Company to deepen students understanding about their operations as well as Ghana’s Petroleum Industry to help develop students interest in the petroleum industry.

TTU first competed in the Gas Challenge in 2019 and came second at the preliminary level.
However, the Lead Coach of the three-member TTU contingent at the 2021 Gas Challenge, Justice John Owusu, says it hopes to win the overall competition this year to cement TTU’s place in training for the oil and gas sector.

“If we are able to perform well, it would at least tell the community and the world that indeed TTU is the hub of oil and gas training and the right place to come to, so we are committed to that. At our last competition in 2019, we were second at the preliminaries but we are hoping to win this one”, he said.

While giving the details of contestants, Mr. Owusu also gave the benefits of the competition to participating students and the University.

“The candidates we are presenting are first year B-Tech students pursuing Petroleum Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering who are very much motivated to do well…There are a lot of benefits for both the students and the university. It lifts the image of the University as it is an academic contest based on knowledge. The contestants themselves on the other hand would benefit. Last year’s contestants had the opportunity to even interact with Ghana Gas officials and were airlifted to Accra to also attend an international conference”, he added.

TTU is scheduled to open its preliminary competition in the Zone-3 competition of the Gas Challenge from 10th November, 2021. The Zone-3 comprises of TTU, University of Cape Coast, UCC and University of Mines and Technology, UMaT, who are the reigning champions of the Gas Challenge. TTU will progress to compete in the finals of the Gas Challenge if it is able to win the Zone-3 preliminary challenge. This will also come with cash prizes among others.

Being the host of the Jubilee Technical Training Centre, JTTC, a state of the art petroleum training centre constructed by the Jubilee partners led by Tullow Oil, coupled with TTU’s strategic focus on becoming a true petroleum training hub, a lot is at stake for TTU’s contingent at the Gas Challenge competition.
