Associate Professor John Bentil is an Associate Professor and a Waste Management Expert with the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering of the Takoradi Technical University (TTU). A native of Shama, Prof. Bentil earned a PhD in Minerals Engineering which focused on Waste Processing from the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, Ghana, in 2018.
Asso. Prof. Bentil graduated with a Master of Science in Water and Environmental Management from the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, U.K in 2005. Prof. Bentil also earned a Higher Diploma in IT Management from the Westminster College of Computing, London, U.K. and a Diploma in Minerals Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Institute of Mining and Minerals Engineering. As part of his continuous professional development, he has, additionally, earned the following qualifications: A certificate in Project Development and Evaluation from the Han University of Applied Science Expertise Centre in Built Environment, Arnhem, Netherlands; NEBOSH certificate in Occupational Health and Safety at the Workplace; Certificate in Cyanide Awareness Training from Dupont; and Level 2 Certificate in Oil Spillage Awareness and Management from Oil Spill Response, Southampton, U.K.
He obtained his General Certificate Examination Advance Level at Ghana National College in 1990 and the Ordinary Level at Tarkwa Secondary School in 1988. Pertaining to his work life, Prof. Bentil worked as a Leading Laboratory Assistant at the Wet Chemistry Unit of the SGS Analytical Laboratory Services, Tarkwa, from 1993-1996. At Abosso Goldfields Damang Mine Site, he worked as Metallurgical Laboratory Technician – a role in which he performed specialised laboratory investigations on rocks, soils and water to optimise process plant operations. At the same entity, he was the Acting Project Engineer (Metallurgy) in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
Asso. Prof. Bentil has been with TTU since 2006, and has served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2014 to date, Centre Director of the Jubilee Technical Training Centre from 2018 to date, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2009-2013, the HoD of the Civil Engineering Department in 2008 and the present Coordinator of the Competence Based Training programme. His research interests include: Waste Management, Water Treatment, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Pollution Control, Contaminated Lands Remediation and Pyrolysis-gasification of waste and biomass to produce valuable products, including activated carbons for industrial wastewater treatment and gold adsorption.
Currently, he is partnering Prof. Marijana Hazima-Nyarko of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of University of Osijek, Croatia, to develop technologies for the utilisation of end of life lorry, car tires and plastics as geotechnical/construction materials.
He has participated in seminars and conferences, both local and international. He has, in total, authored and co-authored fourteen (14) published peer-reviewed journal papers and one book. He has served on numerous boards and committees. He is an external assessor and examinations moderator of some technical universities and reviewer of some local and international journals.
