The Department of Textiles Design and Technology is Takoradi Polytechnic’s finest and most popular Department, with a distinguished history of academic achievement and an ambitious agenda for the future.

Vision
The Department seeks:

 

  • To mentor and advice students on how to set-up and manage their own textiles enterprise where possible.
  • To increase the practical base training to improve and re-vitalize the vocations in the dwindling textile industry and also to understand the uses and economic value of textile products.
  • To make the Department of Textiles a one stop research unit in all areas of textile technology 
  • To help promote textiles in order to preserve, transmit, and sustain the country’s cultural heritage.

Mission
The mission of the department is to produce middle to high-level textile technologists to fit into the socio-economic industry of the country in sectors such as weaving, dyeing, printing, crocheting, embroidery, textile designing, embroidery, textile technology and textiles education.

Goals
It is the department’s quest to promote a high sense of creativity in students through a variety of art activities which are in three main units such as embroidery, weaving, printing and dyeing technology by using appropriate tools, materials and methodology. These include classroom lectures, seminars, workshop practice, fieldworks and educational trips. It is also the aim of the department to provide students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge for visual thinking in the arts and the appreciation of quality and aesthetics in industrial art productions.

Again the department encourages the development and use of local tools and materials in promoting self employment; that is, the creativity in art and technology with confidence to manage and pursue self employment with cottage industry.

Objectives

  • To offer Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor of Technology programmes in selected areas in Textiles to improve the capacity of personnel engaged in building the nation’s economy.
  • To develop in graduates, appropriate skills and attitudes required for patriotism and national development.
  • To create a congenial atmosphere for effective teaching/learning that will motivate students to explore their intellectual capabilities to the optimum in the field of textiles.

 Programmes offered in the Department

The major courses include; Fibre and Yarn Manufacture, Fabric Production, Textile Design, Dyeing and Printing Technology, Embroidery, Computer Aided Design, Textile Finishing, Textile Calculations, Drawing, Entrepreneurship and Textile Technology.

  • Bachelor of Technology (Industrial Arts - Textiles) option.

The specialized courses included Fibre Studies; Spinning Technology; Weaving Processes; Pre-Treatment; Mill Finishing; Dyeing Processes; Printing Processes; Garment Manufacture and Fabric Decoration. 

Staffing Position

The department has 16 teaching staff, consisting of two (2) Senior Lecturers, Twelve (12) Lecturers and two (2) Senior Instructors. It has an administrator, 6 Technicians and a model.
