The Department of Tourism was established in November 2008. The Department started with the offer of Bachelor of Technology in Tourism Management (a top-up degree programme for HND Tourism and Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management (HCIM) graduates).

Vision
The Department is committed to its vision of becoming a world class centre of excellence for teaching and research in Tourism Management.

Mission
The Department aims to produce graduates who will function effectively to help actualize the potentials of Ghana’s tourism industry for the socio-economic development of the country.

Objectives
The objectives of the department are to:

  1. Equip graduates with the managerial and operational skills to enable them work effectively in tourism agencies, organizations and related enterprises;
  2. Equip graduates with the skills to establish and manage their own tourism ventures; and 
  3. Undertake research in the tourism industry in the Western Region and Ghana, in order to identify problems and suggest solutions. 

In order to achieve the above objectives the Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA) of which TOUGHA will provide the following:

  • Placements for internship for staff and student of the Tourism Department;
  • Guest Lecturers;
  • Resource persons for seminar and workshops; and
  • Support for research work in the Tourism Department. 

The Tourism Department on the other hand will

  • Furnish TOUGHA with research findings;
  • Provide resource persons for seminars and workshops; and
  • Support TOUGHA in the organization of fairs and symposia.

Available Programmes

Programmes offered by the department include:   

  • Bachelor of Technology in Tourism Management, a 2-year top-up programme for HND holders of Tourism and Hotel Catering and Institutional Management (HCIM);
  • Higher National Diploma in Tourism Management; a three (3) year programme; and
  • Diploma in Tourism Management, a 2-year programme that runs through the normal semester programme of the Polytechnic.

Staff Position

 The Staff strength of the department is Twenty (22) in number and one national Service person. This comprises of eight (8) core teaching staff, twelve (12) servicing teaching staff and two (2) administrative staff.
