Mechanical Engineering (Auto, Ref. & Air Cond.)

AUTO & REFRI. OPTION

Isaac Edunyah

Mr. Isaac Edunyah, HOD

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established during the ‘old’ polytechnic era, to offer the following programmes:

(a) General courses in Engineering

(b) Mechanical Engineering Craft Practice

(c) Welding (Intermediate and Advanced)

(d) Mechanical Engineering Technician

(e) Motor Vehicle Technician

(f) Ordinary Technician Diploma

With the introduction of the Ghana Education Reforms in 1993, Takoradi Polytechnic, amongst other Polytechnics, was elevated to tertiary status to complement the role of the Universities. The Mechanical Engineering Department, from that moment, began to offer programmes at the Higher National Diploma level.

Hitherto, our students were going to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for all their prescribed laboratory experiments. But with the setting up of an integrated mechanical laboratory and an electronic-based automotive laboratory, our students now perform most of their laboratory practicals within.

THE AUTOTRONIC LABORATORYGoals and Objectives
The goals of the Department are to contribute to national development and alleviation of poverty by providing specific employable skills, technological and scientific education and research in Mechanical Engineering.

The objectives of the Department are to:

  • Focus on middle-level manpower training with emphasis on the acquisition of manufacturing, adaptive design and maintenance skills;
  • Increase access to career-focused tertiary training, while encouraging female enrolment in Mechanical Engineering programmes;
  • Offer Higher National Diploma (HND)/ Higher Diploma (HD) in practical oriented programmes in Mechanical Engineering;
  • Design curricula to respond to the changing needs of the labour market; and
  • Offer Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) in Mechanical Engineering as top-up programme.

Programmes

(A) HND Mechanical Engineering with the following options:

  • Plant
  • Production
  • Automotive
  • Refrigeration and Air-conditioning

 Non-HND Programmes

(B) Motor Vehicle Technician Level III

(C) Mechanical Engineering Technician Level III

Strategic Plan
The Department has put in place highly advanced measures to run the following courses in the very near future:

  • Higher Diploma in Petroleum Engineering (in collaboration with Aberdeen University, Scotland, UK, and other related Universities);
  • Higher Diploma in Plant Engineering;
  • Higher Diploma in Production Engineering;
  • Higher Diploma in Automobile Engineering;
  • Higher Diploma in Refrigeration and Air-condition Engineering; and
  • Higher Diploma in Safety and Fire Engineering.

B.Tech programme in the following areas:

  • B.Tech Automobile Engineering,
  • B.Tech Plant Engineering;
  • B.Tech Production Engineering; and
  • B.Tech Air-condition and Refrigeration

Staffing Position

 The Department has eighteen (18) teaching staff, one (1) of which is part-time.
