Faculty of Engineering



The School of Engineering is the premier school of Takoradi Polytechnic. It began with craft programmes in 1953.  Currently, the school has five (5) departments, running HND, B.Tech., and Technician Programmes  The school has a population of over two thousand, three hundred (2,300) students and seventy-seven (77) teaching staff, and  is equipped with modern facilities for the training of students and execution of engineering projects.


The School of Engineering seeks to achieve excellence in the provision of technical education to boost Ghana’s employment and human resource capacity building. Again, it intends to go into research and consultancy to improve production in the sectors of industry and commerce.


The School of Engineering was established to provide higher education in the areas of technology and engineering to meet the demand for technological skills and manpower for industries.

Currently, with the exception of the Department of Furniture and Design, all the four departments of the school run evening programmes leading to the award of Higher National Diploma (HND). The Department of Mechanical Engineering operates a driving school which enrols learners from the polytechnic community and the general public.

Presently, the Civil Engineering Department has adopted the Competency-Based Training (CBT) approach in order to produce practically-oriented graduates.

1. Many of the students of the School of Engineering are working in reputable oil companies---Tullow, Ghana Limited, Bart Long and Balkan Energy and so on. Spurred on by the excellent performances of our students, Tullow and Balkan have signed special Memorandum of Understanding with the Polytechnic for the establishment of modern laboratory for control and instrumentation systems for the training of highly skilled technicians.

2. Under the auspices of the Industrial Liaison Office of Takoradi Polytechnic, the school has had an educational tour to the Bui Dam.  Consequently, a three-year employment contract has been signed with the Bui Dam Authority.

3. The School has a modern Autotronic Laboratory at the Mechanical Engineering Department for the diagnosis of vehicle problems. This has expanded the training base of artisans.  The School intends to run short courses to upgrade the skills of artisans in the polytechnic.

4.  The school also has a modern electrical, fluid and hydraulics laboratory, which is well equipped to train students and staff from industries to acquire industrial skills.

5. The Auto section of the Mechanical Department in the School of Engineering undertakes repair and service of vehicles of the institution and members of staff.

6. Takoradi Polytechnic has benefited from a Petrochemical and Hydraulics Laboratory installed by Amatrol Inc, Jefferson, Indiana, USA. and as a result, short courses are organised for students and the general public to acquire technological skills.


Future Plans

The Department of Building Technology has plans to introduce HND in Estate Management in future. Plans are also underway to introduce HND programme in Environmental Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering Department in collaboration with Aberdeen University in Scotland will soon start a Bachelor of Technology programme in Mechanical Engineering with many options and also Higher National Diploma in Petroleum Engineering; The Civil Engineering Department has introduced a Bachelor of Technology programme in Civil Engineering. In addition, there is a plan for the introduction of Diploma in Interior Design and Technology by the Furniture and Production Department in the nearest future.
